KELTER Lagrein

Cultivated since the 16th century by the Benedictine Fathers in Gries in Bolzano, the Lagrein grape variety is also widespread in Trentino, to the point of endorsing the opinion that its name may originate from Vallagarina, where it found particularly suitable environments for its growth. It is a native vine with the noblest qualitative characteristics. It prefers warm, sheltered environments, although its late budding prevents it from being damaged by spring frosts. In spring it is sensitive to marked temperature changes and heavy rainfall, which cause poor fruit set and low production yields. Instead, the grapes produce a wine of remarkable concentration and complexity. The name Kelter (winepress in German) is a tribute to the peasant traditions of Trentino. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel and malolactic fermentation in barriques give intense aromas of wild berries enriched with a light note of vanilla and cocoa. A wine with excellent structure, which presents a perfect balance between a refined tannin and good persistence.
