Lagrein
Of ancient origins and cultivated since the 16th century by the Benedictine Fathers in Gries di Bolzano, Lagrein is a native grape variety of immense character, so widespread in Trentino that it has led to the belief that its name may derive from Vallagarina, where it has found particularly suitable environments for its growth.It prefers warm and sheltered environments, with soils rich in skeleton, while it suffers in cold environments and unstable climatic conditions, especially during flowering, which can limit its yield. Its leaf is pentagonal and trilobed and in autumn it takes on a red-brown colour.The bunch is short and stocky, sometimes with a clearly visible wing, with grapes covered with a persistent bloom. It produces wines of remarkable concentration and complexity, distinguished by structure and depth, in which the richness of the extract is accompanied by a surprising freshness.
