Merlot
Merlot is a grape variety native to south-western France, specifically the Bordeaux area. Its first mentions date back to the late 18th century and the first description of Rendre traces back to 1854. Merlot was introduced to Trentino at the end of the 19th century, where it gradually established itself as one of the most widespread international varieties. In its land of origin, it contributes, together with Cabernet, to the composition of some of the most prestigious wines of the Gironde.
The bunch is medium sized, pyramidal winged and generally sparse. The grape is medium-sized, slightly flattened, with a dark blue, pruinose skin. The juice is colourless, sweet in taste, slightly acidic with a fruity aftertaste of blackberry and cherry.
In Trentino it prefers well-exposed and ventilated low-hill areas, with calcareous-clayey soils, conditions that promote a balanced and harmonious growth. It produces well-structured, smooth, and elegant wines, characterised by a natural predisposition for elegant ageing and a personality that has consolidated its success among the area’s typical wines.
Often vinified in a blend with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it is one of the protagonists of the Rosso Trentino DOC, a local version of the classic Bordeaux blend introduced in the 1960s.
